FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What does it mean to review and reform laws?

Law reform is an essential democratic process that adapts our legal framework to reflect societal shifts and current needs. It’s not just about changing laws; it’s about ensuring they align with our cultural, technological, and economic evolution. This ongoing refinement, whether it’s repealing outdated laws or introducing new ones, must resonate with the Medium-Term Development Plan IV, the Sustainable Development Goals, the Vision 2050, and importantly, the National Goals and Directive Principles, and the National Constitution. It’s a meticulous task that also involves evaluating policies and trends to maintain a legal system that’s both relevant and effective.

How does reviewing and reforming laws impact better development, peace and order, and nation building?

 Laws shape our society and when they become the root of national issues, it’s crucial to reassess and reform them.  When laws are reviewed to suit present need , followed, enforced and implemented, they can achieve the following:

  • Keep the peace and order;
  • Maintain the status quo;
  • Preserve individual rights;
  • Protect minorities against majorities;
  • Promote social justice, and
  • Provide for progressive and effective social, economic, and political changes or developments.

How can individuals, groups or organizations actively participate in reforming and review laws?

At CLRC, we promote public participation in our law reform process. We believe in the power of your voice. Your insights shape the laws that govern us, ensuring they’re relevant and effective. Every opinion matters, and together, we can create laws that resonate with our community’s needs and values. Engage with us, and let’s build a legal framework that stands the test of time in shaping our nation’s future through various engagement platforms such as:

  • nationwide consultations;
  • public inquiries;
  • public forums;
  • small groups and special interest groups meetings;
  • interviews and face-to-face meetings;
  • facilitate questionnaires either in person or electronically;
  • seminars and conferences;
